Trump Ends Obama's Limits on Surplus Military Gear Given to Local Police

The new Trump plan is expected to be revealed on Monday

At that time, some accused law enforcement of using excessive force and being too militarized while dealing with protests and some violent riots over the police-involved deaths of African-American men in Ferguson, Mo., Baltimore and other cities. This is a very bad idea for a whole bunch of reasons. The excessive display made the police response seem like more of an occupation than a safety measure, Ferguson activists later recalled in the recent Whose Streets documentary.

In 2015, Obama put the regulations in place via executive order after police used riot gear, deploying tear gas, dogs and armored vehicles to subdue crowds protesting the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown, the Associated Press reported.

Prohibit the federal transfer of militarized equipment to state and local law enforcement agencies, including Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles, drones and armored vehicles transferred through the U.S. Department of Defense's 1033, U.S. Department of Justice's Byrne Justice Assistance Grant, and U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Homeland Security Grant programs.

This time he is reviving a defunct program providing local law enforcement with military grade gear.

"I am here to announce that President Trump is issuing an executive order that will make it easier to protect yourselves and your communities".

Promising more military-style equipment for local police departments, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the end Monday of limits instituted in the Obama era.

President Trump wants military weapons and armored vehicles to start rolling back to local police departments, according to a new report.

But Sessions said "good equipment saves lives" and the executive order Trump plans to sign would "ensure that you can get the life-saving gear you need to do your job".

Hammond said when he was in Iraq, the US military had millions of dollars of surplus equipment after many of its battles or engagements and much of that could still be used by local law enforcement agencies.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions said the aim was to enhance public safety.

"It is one thing for federal officials to work with local authorities to reduce or solve crime, but it is another for them to subsidise militarization", Senator Rand Paul said in a statement.

Justice Department documents summarizing the order describe much of the gear as "defensive in nature", meant to protect officers from danger.

The NAACP Legal Defense fund called today's reversal by the Trump administration "exceptionally unsafe and irresponsible".
