US Open: Rafael Nadal not letting potential Roger Federer clash cloud goal

Roger Federer of Switzerland reacts after taking a game from Frances Tiafoe of the United States during the U.S. Open tennis tournament Tuesday Aug. 29 2017 in New York

You never know what can happen in the future, but playing again with those long trousers is not going to happen. "I'm not too surprised he's back to this magnitude, and being back at world No. 1 after all these years is really exceptional, really nice for him".

Federer is scheduled to face 19-year-old American Frances Tiafoe in the first round of the US Open. I just want to do my best to try to win and of course to enjoy it.

"I certainly wouldn't have been hurting myself more by trying to play".

He'll probably have seven fairly tough gruelling matches to play, but hopefully there's some easy matches for him along the way. He has played in the this tournament the last two years and not made it past the second round. "And the only bummer is that they could meet in the semis, not the finals".

On the men's side, the real competition comes out to play on Tuesday as Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal take to the court for the first time in this tournament. The women's singles final is Saturday, Sept. 9; the men's singles final is Sunday, Sept. 10. And now with each drawn in the same half of the draw, speculation is that there might be a possible semi-final clash, becoming the first time ever that the Federer and Nadal would battle each other out at the Flushing Meadows. The two have played each other multiple times at the other three slams. He's had a superior 2017 at age 31, winning his 10th French Open and ascending to No. 1.

As an outsider, I expect the world no 84, Sloane Stephens to have a great US Open. "Would have been better for [Federer, Nadal] to be in opposite halves".

Serena's 37-year-old sister Venus, who won this title in 2000 and 2001, has reached the Australian and Wimbledon finals this year and both she and Switzerland's former world number one Caroline Wozniacki, still seeking a first grand slam, are in Muguruza's quarter of the draw. Federer has taken the past four meetings against Nadal, including an epic five-set Australian Open final earlier this year. However, Nadal still leads the head-to-head tie by 23-14.

"If I am in semifinals, no", said Nadal, who won here in 2010 and '13.

Asked if he hopes to play again this season, Murray added: "I'll definitely make a decision on that in the next few days. But anyway, meeting him here in semifinals with Roger, if that happens that will be something great and fantastic".

Only in NY, kids.

"Hopefully it will be a night session", he said. She finished runner up to Angelique Kerber in last year's US Open and can be backed at around 13/2 to go one better this year.

"I mean, I have a hard time thinking I could win three Slams in one year. I'm sure it will be a nice prospect".
