Pennsylvania airmen deployed to Harvey storm zone

Coast Guard Using Helicopters for Search and Rescue in Texas

The military's role in Harvey rescue and recovery efforts has been limited by weather and flooding but could soon expand by tenfold or more, a senior National Guard officer said Tuesday.

No Wisconsin National Guard forces are now involved with the response, but thousands of National Guard Soldiers and Airmen from Texas and other states are on duty.

"Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the people of Texas", said Maj. And remaining a named storm after more than five days, Harvey set a new mark for being the longest a USA hurricane has remained a named storm after making landfall. The National Guard Bureau has identified "20,000 to 30,000 additional soldiers and airmen that could be used, if Texas asked for them", Witham said.

The 32nd infantry is the largest unit in the Wisconsin National Guard with 3,400 soldiers, and is based at Camp Williams in Camp Douglas, with soldiers in units across the state and in MI.

He then discussed rebuilding efforts in the coastal area, noting that the state is also dealing with catastrophic conditions in southeast Texas.

Besides the additional National Guard troops from other states, there are about 1,000 active-duty military forces in position to provide assistance if called up by civilian authorities, he said. Others brought water and helped transfer people and equipment onto the National Guard vehicles.

Harvey made landfall Aug. 25 near Rockport, Texas, north of Corpus Christi, as the first Category 4 hurricane to landfall in the USA since Charley in August 2004.

Since making landfall on Friday, Harvey has dumped 9 trillion gallons of water on Texas. Some of them were out on the motorboats, looking for opportune rescues. "We urge residents in the affected areas to continue to follow the instructions of state, local and tribal officials and to stay away from evacuated areas until they are told the areas are safe", Manning said. "We will remain here as long as we are needed".
