UK, Japan urge Chinese pressure on North Korea

British Prime Minister Theresa May is greeted on her arrival at Itami airport Osaka for a three-day visit to Japan Wednesday Aug. 30 2017. May landed Wednesday in western Japan and headed to the ancient capital of Kyoto where she was to attend a

Appearing at a press conference in Tokyo today, Mrs May said: 'The close co-operation between our two countries is particularly important at this critical juncture, with North Korean provocation presenting an unprecedented threat to global security'.

'I am determined that our defence and security co-operation will continue to go from strength to strength, enhancing our collective response to threats to the worldwide order and to global peace and security, through increased co-operation on defence, cyber security, and counter-terrorism.

"It is very meaningful that Prime Minister May and I agreed to further strengthen pressure on North Korea and to call on China to play a larger role", he added.

May noted that U.K. Typhoon fighter jets took part in a joint drill in Japan last year, the first country other than the U.S.to do so, and that British troops will join an exercise in Japan next year for the first time.

North Korea featured heavily in the talks after it launched a ballistic missile on Tuesday that passed over Japanese territory, prompting worldwide condemnation.

May boarded the Izumo on Thursday at a Japanese naval base in Yokosuka, south of Tokyo.

"Beijing does not need London to teach it how to deal with North Korea", the newspaper said.

May's comments come after she attended Japan's top security meeting Thursday, reportedly only the second foreign leader to attend a meeting of the National Security Council after Australia's then-prime minister Tony Abbott in 2014.

She told Sky News television there was "absolutely no basis for those reports whatsoever". The three-day trip is focusing on Brexit, trade and security issues.

Both May and Abe addressed a delegation of British business leaders and senior representatives from major Japanese investors in Britain, such as carmakers Nissan, Toyota and conglomerate Hitachi.

May said Japanese investment after Britain's vote to leave the European Union was a vote of confidence and she pledged to build close trade ties with Japan.

"I made clear how strongly the United Kingdom condemns the launch", Mr Field said.

She pledged that Britain would deepen trade relations and become even more outward-looking post-Brexit.
