7 students die in Kenya school fire

Supporters of opposition leader Raila Odinga celebrate after the verdict in Nairobi Kenya yesterday

The school, which has more than 1,000 students, will remain closed for two weeks while the investigation takes place.

At least seven Kenyan teenage schoolgirls have been killed and 10 others taken to hospital after a fire broke out at their boarding school dormitory in Nairobi, officials said.

After the fire incident on Saturday night that claimed the lives of nine students and left 51 others injured, Form One students and their parents were invited for a counselling session Monday.

Matiangi said there had been a spate of arson attacks on schools around the country, including in the coastal city of Mombasa and the western city of Kisumu. I sleep in the one adjacent to the one where the fire started.

The police, he said, were pursuing different angles, among them whether the fire was caused by an arsonist or an electricity fault.

"Our children don't have phones in school so I rushed here because as a parent I'm anxious, but we have yet to be told where our children are", said parent Joyce Mwambia.

"She had inhaled carbon monoxide and needed to be under observation", said Zippy.

The girl, who is in Form One, said during the commotion, electricity went off even as the fire spread and the smoke engulfed the dormitory.

Those who unfortunately died in the inferno would be identified after DNA tests as they were burnt beyond recognition.

"Some of the fires we have faced before in the sector are related to that kind of thing, politicization of school headship, politicization of responsibility in the education sector". It was not clear how many fires were deliberate. "Right now, we are focused on managing the wounds to ensure that there are no infections", said Wanjala.

Control of a school can mean not just a government salary but an opportunity to extort extra money from students and parents in fees or other charges.
