More than 4 million customer records exposed in cloud storage error

Around 4 million Time Warner personal records exposed in data leak

Approximately 4 million records containing Time Warner Cable subscribers' personal information were accidentally leaked last month, an investigation has found.

A Charter representative refused to elaborate, but Gizmodo says the breach originated in India at BroadSoft, a communications company whose partners included Time Warner Cable. In some cases, there were duplicated records, implying that the 4 million leaks may be half.

"We see more and more examples of how bad actors use leaked or hacked data for a range of crimes or other unethical purposes", Bob Diachenko, Kromtech's chief communications officer said. "Other databases also have billing addresses, phone numbers etc. for hundreds of thousands of TWC customers". There were also some internal company records like credentials for external systems, internal emails, and SQL database dumps.

On August 24, the Kromtech Security Center had its employees research a data breach at World Wrestling Entertainment.

The BroadSoft data was not properly configured to allow public access in AWS, Kromtech said.

A spokesperson for BroadSoft said the company had verified that customer data was exposed to the public internet, but it does not believe the information to be "highly sensitive". One of the repositories was secured nearly immediately following the email warning, despite claims by an India-based BroadSoft engineer (in an email response to Kromtech) that the repository had nothing to do with the cloud-based unified comms specialist. Upon discovery, the information was removed immediately by the vendor, and we are now investigating this incident with them.

Charter Communications, the parent company of Time Warner Cable, said users' financial information had not been exposed and the data largely concerned former or "legacy" customers.

Verizon isn't the only big United States telecom whose corporate ally left customer data out in the open.

BroadSoft later told Gizmodo that it locked down its Amazon data (Charter says it was taken down) and has not seen evidence that intruders accessed the information. Engineers are deemed to have accidentally leaked not only partner data but also internal sensitive data to malicious individuals.

It has advised MyTWC users to change their user names and passwords. "We apologize for the frustration and anxiety this causes, and will communicate directly to customers if their information was involved in this incident".
