Turkey hits back after Merkel's shift on its European Union membership

Journalists watch the televised debate between Merkel and Schulz in Berlin

"There is no benefit in populist remarks ahead of elections", said Cavusoglu in response to German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel's comments claiming that Turkey would never become an European Union member state.

The comments are likely to increase already strained ties between the two North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies that have worsened since Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan's crackdown on opponents in the aftermath of a failed coup attempt in July a year ago.

Her spokesman later tried to limit the damage by insisting that talks with Turkey were already dormant. "But I will fight for this".

Germany's TV election debate showed little policy difference between the two main candidates and both agreed that Turkey should not join the EU.

Twelve Germans are in Turkish detention on political charges, four of them holding dual citizenship.

Merkel said she did not want to break Germany's ties with Turkey or cease Turkey's opportunity to join the European Union, as at least 50 per cent Turkish people hope to join.

"I'll speak to my [EU] colleagues to see if we can reach a joint position on this so that we can end these accession talks".

When specifically asked whether the government had any plans on how to improve relations with Erdogan, Merkel's response was curt.

Mr. Erdogan's spokesperson Ibrahim Kalin reacted to the comments made in the debate by saying that "it is not a coincidence that our President Erdogan and Turkey were central to yesterday's debate between Merkel and Schulz".

Ahead of the German election, Merkel's conservative bloc holds a big lead of around 15 percentage points over the center-left Social Democrats, led by former European Parliament President Martin Schulz. However, accession talks have ground to a virtual halt and European Union leaders have stepped up their criticism of Mr Erdogan.

The German Foreign Ministry said in a statement that German citizens may be arrested during their visit to Turkey due to the deterioration of relations between Berlin and Ankara, according to the media.
