Disney, other Florida theme parks closing as Irma nears

What Will Walt Disney World Do In Case Of A Hurricane? Here Is What You Can Expect

Walt Disney Co (NYSE:DIS) is keeping most areas of its Orlando area theme parks open for the time being, but as Hurricane Irma moves slowly toward the Orlando coast, more closures could be on the way. We hope to resume normal operations on Tuesday, September 12.

As the storm continues to stay very strong as it heads toward Florida, here are some of the things that Disney will do, if necessary, to take care of all those on property.

Major theme parks located in Central Florida are planning on closing their doors for multiple days beginning Saturday evening, according to a report from the Orlando Sentinel. I'm adding this to the story: Since opening in 1971, the park has only been closed four other times, all in anticipation of hurricanes.

PREVIOUSLY, FRIDAY PM: "The Most Magical Place on Earth" happens to be in the path of the Biggest Storm on Earth - and Mother Nature has won this round. Both parks will remain closed on Sunday, Sept. 10, and Monday, Sept. 11. Adventure Island will be closed Saturday - Monday. The park will close early Saturday, September 9 at 5 p.m.

More news: Xbox One keyboard and mouse support is still on the way

ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex: The complex will close Saturday through Monday.

Fort Wilderness campers need to have their vehicles out of the resort by 2 p.m. Saturday, a Walt Disney World spokeswoman said Thursday afternoon.

UPDATE: SeaWorld Orlando and Busch Gardens Tampa Bay are closing at 5 p.m. Saturday due to the storm.

Walt Disney World has a history of closing only during the rarest of times. Disney World still has not confirmed its plans. Friday, Universal Studios in Florida confirmed it will close its parks Sunday and Monday. In an earnings call in February, Disney CEO Bob Iger said that closing the park for just one-and-a-half days for last year's Hurricane Matthew dragged down the parent company's quarterly revenue by roughly $40 million. They do not plan to reopen until Tuesday. Everyone in the theme park community around the world is sending their best wishes to you today and throughout the storm.
