FBI Investigating Uber For Spying On Lyft

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is probing to see if Uber Technologies Inc had used software to illegally interfere with its competitors the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday. A stock image

The ride-hailing software firm is cooperating with the investigation centred on the use of a programme called "Hell" which scraped information from Lyft's app using fake driver accounts.

Discontinued previous year, project "Hell" allowed Uber to obtain data on drivers working for both companies, which the Wall Street Journal said may have allowed it to lure drivers away from Lyft with cash incentives.

The investigation is led by the NY office of the agency and the Manhattan US attorney's office, the report said.

Uber is also facing investigations into its use of another software program created to evade federal regulators and whether the company engaged in bribery in foreign countries.

The FBI investigation is apparently looking at whether Uber's "Hell" scheme constituted unauthorised access to computers.

This year has been a terrible one for ride-hailing company Uber.

Uber noted that a civil lawsuit filed by a Lyft driver over the "Hell" program had been dismissed by a federal court. Uber ultimately stopped its Hell program a year ago, according to the sources, but the legal issues surrounding it remain. However, the new probe is only one of three FBI investigations into Uber.

The Justice Department is investigating Uber's use of a software tool dubbed "Greyball" that, according to The New York Times, was meant to help drivers evade transportation regulators.

Heat from the Federal Bureau of Investigation added to the mountain of other problems that have Uber in hot water.

Then, last month, the Justice Department took initial steps to investigate the managers at the company due to their violations against foreign bribery. The software would allow Uber to better understand how to recruit and attract future drivers.

The so-called Hell program is just one of the many issues that are on the plate for new Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, who has been on the post for just two weeks.
