Malala says world should protect Rohingya Muslims

Myanmar's Rohingya Crisis Escalates

This week another honorary Canadian citizen and Nobel Peace Prize victor, girls' education activist Malala Yousafzai, publicly condemned Aung San Suu Kyi's feeble leadership in protecting the Rohingya.

More than 250,000 Rohingya refugees have fled to Bangladesh in the last two weeks to evade persecution in Myanmar, the United Nations said Friday.

Witnesses in Myanmar's Rakhine state say entire villages have been burned to the ground since Rohingya militants launched a series of co-ordinated attacks on August 25, prompting a military-led crackdown that is believed to have left at least 400 Rohingya dead. It added that a failure by the civilian government of Aung San Suu Kyi to come to grips with economic inequality and provide adequate public services such as education, access to justice and disaster relief would allow Ma Ba Tha to gain legitimacy.

"We make sure that all the people in our country are entitled to protection of their rights as well as, the right to, not just political but social and humanitarian defence", she reportedly told Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan during a phone call on September 5.

"We need to wake up and respond to it - and I hope that Aung Sang Suu Kyi responds to it as well", she added.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for example, has refused to speak out and has instead offered his support to her.

The International Crisis Group, a Brussels-based think tank, said in a report on "Buddhism and Politics in Myanmar" that the crisis triggered by Rohingya insurgent attacks and massive retaliation by the army has boosted anti-Muslim sentiment nationwide.

While the university might have produced many people who went on to win Nobel prizes, she is unusual in having one before she has arrived.

But the brutal fact is that today, the world is talking about genocide and a Nobel Peace Prize victor in same breath.

All three attendees, including American Peace Prize victor Jody Williams, who worked with the Canadian government to ban landmines, added their voices Friday to the global condemnation of Suu Kyi.

"The images we are seeing of the suffering of the Rohingya fill us with pain and dread".

Yousafzai, 20, called on the global community to provide sanctuary for those fleeing the violence. The way they are killing and torturing one of the most persecuted minorities in the world is absolutely unacceptable.

"Over the last several years, I have repeatedly condemned this tragic and shameful treatment", Ms Yousafzai said in a statement posted on Twitter on Sunday.

Many like me had Che Guevara-inspired Suu Kyi T-shirts with "Free Burma" slogans. Why Aung San Suu Kyi can't remain indifferent to this crisis. We pray for you to intervene in the escalating crisis and guide your people back towards the path of righteousness.

In an open letter, he told his fellow Nobel Peace Prize victor that it is "incongruous for a symbol of righteousness" to lead a country where violence against the Rohingya is being carried out. None other than 1991 Nobel Peace Prize victor Aung San Suu Kyi, who also happens to be one of Canada's six honorary citizens. They were overwhelmed when Suu Kyi got the Noble Prize.

"Aung San Suu Kyi received this prize for her peaceful resistance in the face of oppression". "How the Nobel peace laureates behave after taking the prize has nothing to do with the Nobel committee".

The United Nations secretary general, Antonia Guterres, on Tuesday said, the government clearance operations in Rakhine risked ethnic cleansing.
