TVR Griffith unveiled: V8 two-seater marks official return of United Kingdom icon

TVR takes covers off 200-mph Griffith supercar

TVR has unveiled its all-new sports vehicle, the Griffith, at the Goodwood Revival. The body was formed using a new "iStream" process devised by Formula 1 race auto designer Gordon Murray, which joins a tubular steel frame with bonded carbon-fiber body panels for exceptional rigidity without racking up too many pounds. In other words, the Griffith is challenging the Porsche 911 segment. At 431cm long, 185cm wide and 123cm tall, the Griffith is also the lowest and shortest of the pack, while only the 911 is narrower. These are the kind of numbers that give the new Griffith the right to call itself a "supercar".

The Launch Edition of the Griffith will cost £90,000 and will come with a full leather interior, custom alloy wheels, a bespoke infotainment system and an exclusive range of body colours. While there's plenty to drool over, of particular interest to us Ford fans is the engine: a 5.0-liter DOHC Coyote V8 like the one deployed in the Mustang GT, tuned by Cosworth to produce 500 brake horsepower without any assistance from forced induction. It should allow for impressive levels of torsional rigidity and flawless 50:50 weight distribution. The V8 is then mated to a Tremec Magnum six-speed manual, which allows the Griffith to go from 0-100 km/h in under four seconds and reach a top speed of 322 km/h. The press literature does state that the auto will have a power-weight-ratio of 400bhp/tonne, but 480bhp and a kerb weight of 1250kg results in 390bhp/tonne, short of the claimed figure.

Thanks to the involvement of Gordon Murray and his iStream technology, the Griffith manages to post an impressive power-to-weight ratio of 400 hp/ton.

All eyes at Goodwood Revival are on TVR as the British firm showcases their first all-new sports auto in a decade.

The new Griffith's face is dominated by angular LED headlights and a large central radiator grille with an intricate mesh pattern. This time, it has brought in Gordon Murray - the creator of the McLaren F1 - to design the auto. The chassis is built out of carbon composite combined with aluminum and steel, allowing it to weigh only 1,250 kg. The company says such a configuration improves grip and the feeling provided through the Griffith's electronic power steering.

In true TVR tradition, the interior is unconventional!

There's one more thing promised with the new auto, something that won't be lost on TVR owners of old: it won't fall apart.
