Earlier President Enrique Pena Nieto said more than 770 tremors have been registered in the aftermath of the strongest quake to hit Mexico since 1932.

The neighboring country of Guatemala was also affected by the Friday's powerful quake.

Nieto made the declaration after visiting the town of Juchitán, where the quake hit hardest.

The Mexican Seismological Service recorded 721 aftershocks in the wake of Thursday's 8.1-magnitude temblor.

President Enrique Peña Nieto said Friday that the quake, which was felt by around 50 million people nationwide, was the most powerful to hit Mexico in 100 years.

Authorities initially declared a tsunami alert stretching all the way south to Ecuador, but lifted it several hours later. However, the quake triggered waves that reached as far as New Zealand, more than 11,000 kilometers away.

As Mexican authorities rushed supplies and help to the regions most battered by the natural disaster, Hurricane Katia struck the east coast of Mexico early Saturday as a Category 1 storm.

It is one of three active hurricanes now in the Atlantic Ocean alongside Irma and Jose.

Mexico sits atop five tectonic plates, whose movement makes it one of the most seismically active countries in the world.
