Mexican Quake Death Toll Rises to 60

Mexico earthquake 8.2 magnitude earthquake strikes off Pacific coast

One of the deadliest natural disaster experienced by Mexico in over 8 decades. It was the biggest quake the country has experienced in more than 100 years, Mexico's president said. The town of Juchitán, in Oaxaca, was the wort-hit towns, there were reportedly 17 deaths. They are two of the most impoverished areas in Mexico, and are thought to be the hardest hit. Chiapa's governor recently confirmed that 12 people had lost their lives there. Chiapas Governor Manuel Velasco said in a televised interview that "Homes, schools and hospitals have been affected" by quake damage.

Mexican President Enrique Pea Nieto, has declared three days of national mourning after the strongest quake measuring 8.2 on the Richter scale struck off the country in a century that left at least 61 people dead.

Authorities are now surveying the damage in schools, hospitals and other structures. Residents along the southern coast were earlier instructed to evacuate amid a tsunami warning that was been issued for Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama and Honduras.

Education Secretary Aurelio Nuño Mayer announced that classes had been suspended in 11 of the country's 31 states and in Mexico City to assess the damage at schools.

Zhaira Franco, 35, who works for Facebook in social programming, told the New York Times that she "heard an alarm 30 seconds before the quake hit her building in Mexico City". According to recent reports, the airport suffered minor damages, including broken windows.

A death has also been reported in Guatemala.

Authorities say the death toll likely will continue to rise as more information becomes available.

Videos on social media showed significant tremors in various parts of the country, as well as major damage to buildings and infrastructure.

On Friday off the coast of Mexico were recorded earthquakes of a magnitude of 8.4.
