Pakistan must change its approach to terrorism: US

Wang and Asif announced that China, Pakistan and Afghanistan will hold a new series of three-way talks later this year in China to push forward settlement negotiations with the Taliban while the United States doubles down on its military campaign.

Merely four days after China made a joint declaration with BRICS countries condemning Pakistan-based terrorist groups, the country has changed its statement defending Pakistan in the fight against terrorism.

He expressed appreciation for Beijing's role in hosting a trilateral Afghanistan-China-Pakistan forum, which is expected to be held at the ministerial level before the end of the current year.

Asif thanked China for its "unflinching support for Pakistan" in the war against terrorism and its commitment to the country's progress and development.

Pakistan and China have agreed to work together for defence and regional security. "Instead, we should impose some restrictions on the activities of the elements like LeT and JeM, so that we can show the global community that we have put our house in order", Asif had said while speaking on a Geo News programme called Capital Talk on Tuesday.

The groups mentioned in the declaration included the Afghan Taliban, Islamic State group, Al Qaeda and its affiliates, the Haqqani network, Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammad, Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and Hizbut Tahrir.

However, Wells did reply to another democrat, Ami Bera who questioned India's involvement in Afghanistan and how it proves to be worrisome for Pakistan said, "Pakistan has real and legitimate security concerns in Afghanistan so does India and we would like to see and appreciate constructive economic investments in Afghanistan's stability".

There are signs that Asif has offered some additional assurances that it will crush Pakistan based leaders of East Turkmenistan Islamic Movement (ETIM), which has been involved in a bloody struggle with local authorities in the Xinjiang region of western China, which borders Pakistan. They stressed that there can be no justification whatsoever for any act of terrorism.

"It's our firm view that there is no military solution in Afghanistan, the focus should be on a politically negotiated settlement", Asif told reporters in Beijing.

"We support China on its core issues of Taiwan, Tibet, Xinjiang and South China Sea", he was quoted as saying by Dawn news.

"ETIM is not only a threat to China but also to Pakistan", he said.
