Trump wants to solve North Korea without fighting

The Latest: SKorea, Russia talk about NKorea missile testing

Protesters shout slogans during a rally against the deployment of an advanced USA missile defense system called Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense, or THAAD, near the presidential Blue House in Seoul, South Korea, Friday, Sept. 8, 2017.

September 7, 2017 (EIRNS)-South Korean President Moon Jae-in's meeting in Vladivostok with President Putin and other Russian officials presented an extremely promising approach to South Korean-Russian cooperation in the development of the Russian Far East.

"There are real concerns North Korea might not be able to be deterred", the official said.

In South Korea, thousands of police officers in riot gear swarmed some 400 protesters who had been occupying a road leading to the site where THAAD is installed in the rural town of Seongju.

If North Korea is recognized as a state armed with nuclear weapons, South Korea and Japan are likely to seek to possess nukes in response.

Noting that Trump and President Moon Jae-in had pledged to use all means available to apply maximum pressure to North Korea, the official stressed that the two leaders had promised to strengthen the allied South Korea-US military force. But tensions in China-U.S. ties have increased since Trump took office, with the U.S. president having authorized an investigation into China's alleged theft of intellectual property, and suggesting trade relations would be linked to Beijing's help on North Korea.

Moon also expressed regret over clashes between protesters and police that left dozens injured Thursday when the US military added the four launchers to the Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense System in rural Seongju.

Seoul's Defense Ministry said Thursday it couldn't immediately confirm when the four new launchers will be operationally capable.

Local residents worry about rumored health hazards related to the system's high-powered radars and the possibility of being targeted in North Korean attacks.

The nuclear test, North Korea's sixth since 2006, came on the heels of its groundbreaking launch of intercontinental ballistic missiles in July that pushed it closer to proving an ability to achieve a long-cherished goal: to have a nuclear- tipped missile that could strike America.

Putin said he and Abe discussed the prospect of a peace treaty officially ending World War Two hostilities, which has never been signed because of the territorial dispute.

Instead, Putin reiterated the existing position that calls for dialogue.

Russian Federation is every bit as important as China in the current phase, in which the USA and South Korea are trying to punish the North hard for its latest nuclear test.

Speaking after the talks with the visiting South Korean president, Putin in televised remarks urged North Korea's neighbors to support the Russian-Chinese roadmap. "But I can tell you that North Korea's behaving badly and it's got to stop, OK?" he added.

Putin, speaking in China on Tuesday, had condemned the nuclear test as provocative, but said that Russian Federation views sanctions on North Korea as "useless and ineffective". He told reporters before his departure from Japan that "We must make North Korea understand there is no bright future for the country if it pursues the current path".
