Military action against North Korea appears 'too horrific': United Nations chief

North Korea vows more 'gift packages' for the US in nuclear row

Tensions on the Korean Peninsula have heightened since Washington recently engineered tougher sanctions in the United Nations Security Council over the North's testing of two intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM).

GENEVA | The recent firing of ballistic missiles and nuclear test of North Korea as a "gift package" to the intention of the United States, that Pyongyang will continue to send if Washington does not stop its "provocations", said Tuesday the ambassador of north korea to the UN.

North Korea is under mounting worldwide pressure over its missile and military nuclear programs and has been subjected to an array of sanctions by the United Nations.

However, at a news conference in China, Mr Putin stopped short of expressing support for more United Nations sanctions on North Korea, and said Russian Federation viewed them as "useless and ineffective".

Han Tae-song, North Korean ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, issued the warning on Tuesday during the UN-sponsored Conference on Disarmament two days after his country conducted its sixth nuclear test.

United States disarmament ambassador Robert Wood said that North Korea had defied the global community once again with its test.

Earlier on Tuesday, US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley had said that North Korea is "begging for war" with abusive use of missiles and nuclear threats.

Mr Putin called for talks with North Korea, and warned against "military hysteria". "The U.S. will receive more "gift packages".as long as it relies on reckless provocations and futile attempts to put pressure on the DPRK", he added without elaborating. She urged the 15-member Security Council to impose the "strongest possible" sanctions to deter him and shut down his trading partners.

China accounted for 92 percent of North Korea's trade in 2016, according to South Korea. The White House said on Monday President Donald Trump had agreed "in principle" to scrap a warhead weight limit on South Korea's missiles in the wake of the North's latest test.
