Woman charged in shooting of homeless man

Katie Quackenbush arrested for allegedly shooting a homeless man Gerald Melton in Nashville Tennessee

Katie Layne Quackenbush, 26, has been charged with attempted murder for the August 26 shooting of 54-year-old Gerald Melton, who remains hospitalized at Vanderbilt University Medical Center with critical injuries, according to the Tennessean.

Quackenbush has been charged with attempted murder in the shooting of a homeless man in Nashville last month.

Bond for Quackenbush is set at $25,000. The two began yelling at each other, police said, and Quackenbush allegedly exited the vehicle armed and shot Melton twice. An argument quickly ensued after Melton asked the aspiring country singer to move her auto.

Her father, Jesse Quackenbush, said his daughter opened fire because she felt threatened.

Mr Melton then allegedly walked back to the area where he'd been trying to sleep.

Jesse Quackenbush said that a business owner in the area told him he had purchased weapons for his entire legal staff, and had got a guard dog, because Melton had "threatened to kill all of them over the a year ago and a half". He kept coming and she fired a second round, again meant to scare him away.

She discharged two "cautioning shots" and afterward left, in light of the fact that Melton supposedly kept on moving toward the ladies.

"She didn't try and kill this guy", he said of her daughter, a single mother of a 5-year-old boy.

Quackenbush, who goes by the name Katie Layne as a singer, has no prior criminal convictions. But apparently Quackenbush didn't like that request because an argument followed and she shot Melton.

"The driver fired a round as a warning to scare him away as he came at her".

According to online court records, Quackenbush had a previous misdemeanor charge for assault in Texas in October 2013. Her father said Tuesday she was charged after "throwing a glass of water" in the face of her ex-husband's girlfriend "because of some insulting remarks".

Jesse Quackenbush, Katie's father, tells the story of the shooting differently.

When they returned, Quackenbush's friend's vehicle was surrounded by crime scene tape.

He maintains she was wrongfully charged because she was defending herself from Melton. Another person who found Melton wounded called authorities for help.

The friend took an Uber home, Quackenbush said. The police department didn't hear anything from Quackenbush until her attorney reached out to the prosecutor's office at the start of the following week.

Quackenbush also started a now-defunct company called Stitches Promo Girls in 2011.

Melton asked Quakenbush to move the SUV, and an argument ensued. "She had no expectation of slaughtering him".
