Georgia utilities say power restored to nearly 95 percent of customers

Irma outage update: 26000 Georgia customers waiting on power as of Saturday morning

"We won't stop working until we've restored power to all of our customers", Garner said.

But not all of her neighbors have recovered from Hurricane Irma.

The outages since Hurricane Irma whipped South Florida with tropical force winds 10 days ago, are still among the state's highest in Miami-Dade County, where 16,940 homes, mostly in South Dade south of Miller Drive, are still powerless.

"Our efforts are centered on getting the lights back on for our customers who have been without power the longest", Eric Silagy, president and CEO of FPL, said.

Holland Power Services, based in Maugerville just outside Fredericton, was asked by Florida power company - Duke Energy- to assist in returning power to some of the 20 million people affected.

While Florida Power & Light Co. closes in on its deadline to restore power to all Southwest Florida customers by Wednesday, it faces some potentially costly legal problems.

About 300,000 customers remain without power, according to a September 17 statement.

The populous Miami-Dade County is almost 95% restored, and FPL said it is on track to have restoration essentially complete on Tuesday.

Since the storm passed through late Sunday and early Monday, 267,820 Brevard customers who had lost power have had it restored.

Exceptions could occur in areas throughout Florida that are impacted by unusual circumstances such as tornadoes, severe flooding, heavy tree and debris damage.

85 percent of restoration is complete in Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte, DeSoto, Hendry, Lee and Glades counties.

The utility estimated Irma damage included almost 1,500 broken or damaged power poles, 2,400 fallen trees, 450 damaged transformers, and more than 6,000 spans of wire totaling almost 230 miles. Up to 80 percent of the flood damage to residential properties is not covered by any flood insurance, CoreLogic said.

Salmon said the gratitude the people of Florida have shown his crew and other crews is overwhelming.

When asked by News 6 how customers could be wrongly told their power was restored, Gould answered, "It's a frustration that we have heard and we are keenly aware of it".
