'I'm Mad as Hell': San Juan Mayor Blasts Aid Delays

By Robin Respaut and Dave Graham

He accused Cruz and unnamed others of "such poor leadership" saying they could not "get their workers to help" and "want everything to be done for them".

Faced with mounting criticism over his administration's response to recovery efforts on hurricane-devastated Puerto Rico - including an angry statement from the mayor of San Juan - President Trump lashed out early Saturday on Twitter.

"Puerto Rico was totally destroyed".

Trump responded on Saturday by claiming Cruz has "poor leadership".

She said: 'We are dying, and you are killing us with the inefficiency. "This is the time to show our 'true colors.' We can not be dsitracted by anything else".

"The goal is one: saving lives". She then addressed President Trump himself: "We are not as second-class citizens, but as animals that can be disposed of". This is, "there's a truckload of stuff that can not be taken to people" story. "When you don't have food for a baby, it's not a good news story".

Republicans and Democrats had urged Mr Trump to waive a little-known federal law called the Jones Act that prohibits foreign-flagged ships from shuttling goods between U.S. ports. "There's been no help from FEMA nor from the federal government nor from anyone", said Elisa Gonzalez, 49. "Don't take my word for it, take a three-star general's word for it".

Even worse than that, the mayor of this town of 43,000 told the crisis co-ordination centre 25 miles away in the capital, San Juan, there was no water - he had been forced to drain his municipal swimming pool in order that his people could wash, bathe and flush their toilets. "I am begging, begging anyone who can hear us to save us from dying".

"The Navy and Air Force could have been there Sunday", retired Lt. Gen. Russel Honoré, the man who finally got our response to Hurricane Katrina back on track, said Thursday.

Despite the typical household income in Puerto Rico being less than half of what it is in the poorest U.S. state, the cost of living is exceptionally high, and more than 40% of people live below the USA poverty line.

Trump's latest remarks - issued from his luxury golf resort in New Jersey - could further inflame sentiment.

The Saturday morning tweets included photos of the mayor meeting with hurricane victims and rescue workers, wading hip-deep through a flooded street and comforting an elderly woman.

You're going straight to hell, @realDonaldTrump.

San Juan resident Judith Berkan said power shortages and long lines for cash, food, gasoline, and medical clinics were wearing people down.

That facility relies on a generator, but officials say they constantly worry about running out of fuel.

Later on CNN Friday, Cruz did something Trump would never do: She praised the press for telling Puerto Rico's story.

"Did you tweet this one from the first hole, 18th hole, or the club?" he added.
