Trump says Puerto Ricans 'want everything done for them'

USA lawmakers urged President Donald Trump on Sunday to stop sniping at Puerto Ricans and get to work helping them recover from a devastating hurricane, two days before he was to visit the island, where people remained without food, water or power.

Trump went after the San Juan mayor in a series of early morning tweets for criticizing the White House's hurricane relief efforts in Puerto Rico, accusing her of "poor leadership" and suggesting that the island's residents are are not doing enough to help themselves.

But Trump insisted yesterday that federal emergency response teams and the United States military, which has sent dozens of ships and some 10,000 troops, were doing a "fantastic" job.

Massachusetts Sen. Ed Markey called Trump's comments "disgraceful and shameful".

"Hamilton" creator Lin-Manuel Miranda did not mince words in his message to Donald Trump following the President's Saturday morning Twitter attacks on San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz.

Miranda then directed his 1.7 million followers to the Hispanic Federation, who are among the groups leading the relief efforts in Puerto Rico.

"Carmen has been going door to door helping her own community", adds Alemar, whose family is still in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.

Trump is planning to visit the US territory on Tuesday. "Such poor leadership ability by the Mayor of San Juan, and others in Puerto Rico, who are not able to get their workers to help".

With limited access to food, water, medicine and power 10 days after Hurricane Maria made landfall in Puerto Rico, many have begun to question the federal response to the humanitarian crisis unfolding on the island. The president also dedicated several tweets to pushing back against what he described as "fake news" about the response to Hurricane Maria, which killed at least 16 people in the USA territory. I'm just a little mayor from the capital of San Juan. The president added that besides "Fake News or politically motivated ingrates" everyone is starting to "recognize the wonderful work that has been done". I am begging. Begging anyone who can hear us to save us from dying.

"The different components of the national guard, military, FEMA and our government are working together on the priorities", he added. "FEMA, Brock Long, has been on the phone virtually all the time with me, checking out how things are going", said Rossello.

"Hamilton" creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, whose parents moved to NY from Puerto Rico, took his shot on Twitter, saying: "You're going straight to hell, @realDonaldTrump". "We're distributing fuel, food and water".

But he refused to weigh in on Trump's tweets, which continued into the evening, when the president claimed, "Because of #FakeNews my people are not getting the credit they deserve for doing a great job. they are ALL doing a GREAT JOB!"

While much of the U.S. territory of 3.4 million remained without power, fresh water or communications links long after the catastrophic passage of Hurricane Maria, reports continued to filter in of battered towns across the island that have yet to receive any aid.
