Raiders QB Derek Carr has fracture in back, out 2-4 weeks

Oakland Raiders vs Denver Broncos

In 2014, then-Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo suffered the same injury and only missed a week, according to Rapoport.

The Raiders return home to host the Baltimore Ravens. When Carr didn't get up right away, Raider Nation knew something was wrong. Those five opponents are now a combined 9-9 (Chiefs play Monday night).

Manuel started just three games the past two seasons for the Bills and will be seeking his first win as a starter on Sunday against Baltimore since beating Miami 29-10 on September 14, 2014.

Carr did not get up after the hit and he was in immediate pain.

Simply put, the Raiders weren't able to show that they could get it done in their first two games without Carr past year. The Raiders also take on the 2-2 Ravens, 0-4 Chargers, and the 1-2 Dolphins in the next few weeks where they still have a chance to win. "He's running the Oakland Raider offense", Harbaugh said. Manuel, a first-round pick in Buffalo in 2013, showed some encouraging signs when he relieved Carr after the injury. He started 17 games for them in parts of four seasons and went 6-11 as a starter.

Manuel hasn't won a start since 2014, though he hasn't had many either.

Like so many National Football League teams, the Raiders clearly entered this season with the notion that the backup quarterback wouldn't have to play.

There's no time too soon for Carr to return, but there's no obvious soft landing spot for him in October, either. If it got to that point, I could see Oakland owner Mark Davis being OK with making that move. It was reported to be anything from back spasms, to being kneed in the kidney. Maybe they can rise to the occasion in their first game of the year without him? Carr was sidelined previous year after suffering a fractured tibula in Week 16, and Matt McGloin and Connor Cook weren't able to do enough to prevent an immediate playoff exit with a 27-14 loss to the Texans.
