Walmart makes last-mile delivery acquisition in NYC

Walmart has acquired the logistics startup Parcel to help launch same-day delivery in New York City

But in its ongoing battle with the retail giant, Walmart has acquired a startup that will allow it to offer same-day delivery in New York City.

"Delivery is increasingly one of the most important elements for today's online shoppers, as demands for speed, flexibility, and reliability continue to grow", said Nate Faust, senior vice president, Walmart U.S. eCommerce Supply Chain. Parcel receives packages from a variety of partners at its Brooklyn warehouse and uses routing algorithms and a fleet of vans driven by employees to offer same-day, overnight and two-hour package delivery windows.

And Walmart, which has been on an acquisition rampage to ramp up its online operations, is now hot on Amazon's heels in the fulfillment arena.

Parcel has partnerships with several meal kit, grocery and e-commerce companies, and has delivered more than 1 million meals in the past two years. The acquisition comes as Walmart's Jet.com has been testing free same-day delivery of certain orders to customers in New York City.

The mass merchant, which has been experimenting with a raft of e-commerce delivery and pickup options, last week announced it would start offering free, same-day delivery in New York City.

The extreme density of the New York City area makes it a complicated market for delivery. It's also began testing a service that recruits Walmart employees to deliver packages to customers on their way home. But the retailer sees even more upside for its own same-day deliveries for Wal-Mart and Jet.com. "No problem" emblazoned on the side in big letters. "We probably need to get out in front of this instead of waiting around four or five years and seeing if this becomes successful, '" Yarbrough said. Walmart also announced that Parcel would continue to dole out services to existing customers, which are growing at a rapid rate, which adds another revenue stream for Walmart. Faust said that the city is the "perfect place for high-impact innovation".
