Whole Foods Probing Hack of Taprooms and Restaurants

The Whole Foods store in Lower Macungie Township is among those affected by the data breach that hit the chain, according to the company's website. Walmart shoppers accounted for 24 percent of Whole Foods' new customers in the first week, but accounted for less than 1 percent of its new customers by the third week.

A statement released by the firm says that hackers had honed their focus on Whole Foods point of sale system - where clients insert their cards for payments - in a bid to steal data.

Traffic was up 17 percent during the full week after the price reductions and remained up 4 percent for the following week, ended September 16. The rate is calculated by taking the percentage of regular Trader Joe's customers who visit the chain at least twice a month that reported going to Whole Foods instead on a given day. Over 40 stores of Whole Foods sell beer on the tap. During that period, 15 percent of shoppers came from Costco, 11 percent were from Target and 5 percent were from Wal-Mart's Sam's Club.

In a statement Tuesday, Whole Foods said it "received information regarding unauthorized access of payment card information" that was limited to "taprooms and full table-service restaurants" at some of its locations. Although the initial surge to Whole Foods has slipped, foot traffic remains up 4 per cent for the week ending September 16.

Following Amazon's acquisition of Whole Foods the company saw almost a 20 percent increase in foot traffic, grabbing customers from Walmart, Trader Joe's and a slew of other retailers.

Whole Foods is carrying out investigations presently and will provide updates with time.

"Amazon's acquisition of Whole Foods has the potential to be a gamechanger in the grocery space", said Thasos Group Chief Executive Greg Skibiski.

Amazon.com, Inc. shares rose $3.65 (+0.38%) in premarket trading Thursday.
