Bayern Munich confirm Jupp Heynckes as manager until end of season

Heynckes billed as a 'very good solution' for Bayern by Germany boss Low

Ancelotti was sacked by Bayern Munich last month following a 3-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League and amid claims relations had broken down between the Italian and a number of his experienced squad members.

Heynckes has enjoyed three previous spells in charge of the club, with his most recent between 2011 and 2013 proving the most fruitful, winning the treble of Bundesliga title, the DFB-Pokal and Champions League in his final season.

The club could not be immediately reached for a comment.

It was along with Hermann and Gerland that Heynckes led Bayern to the treble.

Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is delighted Heynckes agreed to return to the club and said he is the "ideal" appointment.

Heynckes first took charge of Bayern in 1987 before returning as caretaker manager in 2009.

"I would not have returned to any other club in the world", he told Bayern's official website. "I feel just wonderful!" - quoted Heynckes the German edition of "Kicker".

Asked whether his players turned on him at Bayern, Ancelotti concluded: "I respected all of them, but as a manager I have to make choices to put 11 on the pitch and seven on the bench".

Two German coaches are believed to be in the running to manage Bayern in the long-term.

Bayern face Freiburg next Saturday, before welcoming Celtic to the Allianz Arena on 18 October. "The coach was the biggest factor in our success", said former Bayern midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger at the time.

As a fleet-footed winger, Heynckes won the 1974 World Cup with West Germany and the 1972 European championships.
