Hasina says Bangladesh was alert against Myanmar's provocations for war

Divided Asean urged to act on Rohingya crisis

The rebels launched coordinated attacks on about 30 security posts and an army camp on August 25 with the help of hundreds of disaffected Rohingya villagers, many wielding sticks or machetes, killing about a dozen people.

UN Secretary General Gutterres, on September 28, briefed UN Security Council members and the UN members about the world's fastest developing refugee emergency and the serious violations of human rights, including indiscriminate firing of weapons, the use of landmines against civilians, and sexual violence.

Bangladesh's prime minister Sheikh Hasina said on Saturday that her government would continue to support Rohingya who had fled to her country.

"It is not only the people's movement, but it is also a security issue, a border issue, which has the potential to destabilize the region, not just areas in Myanmar and Bangladesh", Shahidul Haque said in New Delhi.

Rohingya who have made it to Bangladesh allege the spurt in arrivals follows a new campaign of intimidation by Myanmar's army in parts of Rakhine which were still home to Muslim communities. An equal number had previously fled Myanmar since 1978.

The existing population of Rohingyas in Bangladesh had led to tensions with the local populations.

They say the root causes must be addressed. An estimated 2,000 Rohingya are arriving in Bangladesh every day, said Joel Millman of the International Organization for Migration at a separate briefing.

After a few days of lull, the exodus of Rohingya to Bangladesh has resumed on a large scale this week, mainly due to the lack of food in western Burma, where the suffering is "unimaginable", according to the UN.

"The humanitarian pause was conducted in order to enable humanitarian actors to assess and respond to the humanitarian crisis in Arakan (Rakhine)", the statement said.

Such a possible course of action is obviously being suggested to point out that Suu Kyi as well as the Myanmar armed forces are culpable and must face the punishment such a crime against humanity deserves.

The Rohingya are regarded as illegal immigrants in Myanmar and most are stateless, but authorities reject any suggestion of ethnic cleansing.

The global community has stood by the Rohingyas once Bangladesh has sided with them, she told a reception accorded to her by ruling Awami League at the airport on her return from United States after attending the United Nations General Assembly. "But there is clearly a long way to go", he said.

He noted the origin of the Rohingya crisis is in Myanmar and the solutions also must be in Myanmar.

In Washington, U.S. officials said sanctions and the withholding of aid were among the options available to press Myanmar to halt the violence, but they had to be careful to avoid worsening the crisis. "It is the responsibility of the state not to allow it [radicalization] to happen", he said.
