Massive gas explosion at petrol station in Ghana sends residents fleeing

The explosion was reportedly caused by an open fire used to grill meat near the gas station.

Government officials revealed that the explosion left at least seven people killed and left 130 others gravely injured. "We will investigate. There are some vehicles that were also burned as a result of the explosions", he told AFP. After the first explosion, two more filling stations nearby engulfed in flames.

Ebetaleye added, "The explosion shook the buildings".

Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia described the accident as "one too many" and promised to toughen safety measures. "It was like refugees moving away from a war-torn zone".

"There was some panic and we all just moved away from the scene", said eyewitness George Agbey.

At the scene of the fire on Sunday, scattered fruit and broken coconuts from street vendors were strewn near the wreckage next to burnt-out cars and a fuel lorry, a Reuters witness said.

Dozens of others were injured in the blast, said presidential spokesman Eugene Arhin. The blast was caused by an open fire used to grill meat near the gas station.

The Accra city authorities warned people to avoid the area, which is also home to the University of Ghana campus. A second explosion followed minutes later. According to Starr News' Northern regional correspondent Eliasu Tanko, the vice president was in the region to attend the funeral ceremony of the Chief of Saboba and was later expected to join President Akufo-Addo on his three-day visit to the region.
