London Museum Crash 'Not Terrorist-Related'

One person was arrested after the road traffic collision outside the museum, Xinhua news agency quoted the police as saying.

'Enquiries have established that this incident is not terrorist related and I'd like to thank those who came to assist the injured.

It said the arrested man was among nine people taken to hospital, while two others were treated at the scene.

Police confirmed that a auto mounted a pavement outside the museum on Exhibition Road in South Kensington shortly before 2.20pm today.

According to The Independent, the Metropolitan Police put out a statement which said: "The man detained by officers is now under arrest and is in custody at a north London police station".

Police said on Sunday the driver had been released under investigation.

The incident sparked fears of a terrorist attack in an area busy with tourists and families. The Natural History Museum alone had 4.6m visitors a year ago, equivalent to around 12,600 on an average day. Video of the immediate aftermath posted to Twitter showed men holding the driver against the ground as pedestrians continued to mill around.

The concern sparked a substantial police response to the auto crash, with numerous ambulances sent to the scene along with a hazardous area response team.

"It is a road traffic collision", they said.

The recent incident follows a number of attacks in which vehicles have been used to target pedestrians in London, including at London Bridge in June which claimed eight lives.

The Natural History Museum is the fourth most popular tourist attraction in the United Kingdom, boasting as estimated 4.6 million visist during 2016, according to the Association of /leading Visitor Attractions.

The UK is now under a "severe" level of threat of terror attack, according to the MI5 Security Service's rating system.

A witness said there were large numbers of police and paramedics at the scene although the atmosphere appeared calm.
