Dove apologizes for racially insensitive Facebook ad

Dove Apologises For 'Racist' Facebook Advert Following Backlash

Dove recently faced a lot of flak for a Facebook advertisement where it showed a black woman in a brown shirt. "#DonewithDove". The advert did show the white woman subsequently removing her T-shirt to become a woman of Asian appearance, but that didn't mollify former customers.

The brand said that it had "missed the mark" with regards to accurately representing women of colour. "We are deeply sorry", the company said to ABC News.

Dove deleted a "three-second video clip" from their Facebook page and admitted on Saturday that the company had "missed the mark in thoughtfully representing women of color" in an ad for body wash.

Hundreds of furious social media users have called for a boycott of Dove products calling the ad "disgraceful". She declined to say how many people reviewed the ad or whether any of them were African-American.

Social media users said there were racist implications of a soap ad that showed a black woman transforming into a white woman.

And a 2011 Dove ad was also criticized as racist by some viewers.

One racist ad makes you suspect.

At the time, Dove issued an apology, insisting: "All three women are meant to demonstrate the "after" product benefit".

Despite having apologized and removed the ad, Dove set the internet ablaze.

Still, this weekend's predicament was a curious one for Dove, a beauty company that has a 13-year-old marketing campaign centered on rejecting standard, racially insular notions of beauty in its commercials.

Earlier this year, Dove's United Kingdom branch touted a short video depicting variously shaped Dove body wash bottles with the tagline, "Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes". The moment the woman removes her t-shirt, a white woman in a light shirt emerges on the screen. "We have removed the post and have not published any related content". They believe lighter representations should be at the forefront, and that the darker you are the less handsome and to know that colourism is a problem in the world. I'm sick that your product is in my home. An opportunity to sell products to women of colour. "We do not condone any activity or imagery that intentionally insults any audience".
