Former Equifax CEO Is Grilled On Capitol Hill Following Massive Data Breach

Equifax has announced the results of a review which show that more consumers may have been caught up in last month's massive data breach

United States lawmakers have questioned the former head of credit-scoring company Equifax about a cyber attack which may have exposed personal information of more than 145 million people. "I am here today to say to each and every person affected by this breach, I am truly and deeply sorry for what happened".

Earlier this month, the credit reporting company announced that crucial, identifying information belonging to almost half the country may have been compromised, including birth dates, home addresses and Social Security numbers.

"The human error was that the individual who's responsible for communicating in the organization to apply the patch, did not", Smith said.

The company is now under investigation by the Department of Justice, the FBI and the Federal Trade Commission.

Now, Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) is making Equifax efx and its former CEO rue those words.

Smith, in a statement to a congressional committee released, offered a timeline of the cyber attack which leaked social security numbers and other sensitive data.

Equifax has announced the results of a review which show that more consumers may have been caught up in last month's massive data breach.

Democratic Rep. Frank Pallone of New Jersey also honed in on the company's response to the breach, saying its customer service was "confusing and unhelpful", a common Equifax customer complaint in the wake of the hack.

Terms and conditions to resolve claims against Equifax included an arbitration clause, which is meant to prevent people from suing the company, or joining together for a lawsuit, CNN Money reported. Walden said in opening remarks at the hearing.

Equifax (EFX) said the cybersecurity firm Mandiant has completed the forensic portion of its investigation of the company's cybersecurity incident.

Smith said one reason for the delay was that experts had told company executives that notifying the public "would provoke "copycat attempts" and other criminal activity". Subsequently, a computer scan also failed to identify the weak spot.

Smith said he would expect Equifax to "cooperate" with "particular legislation that arises out of this horrific breach".
