Microsoft ditches Groove Music for Spotify

Microsoft shuts down Groove Music and cuts deal with Spotify instead

Microsoft is saying buh-bye to its streaming music and download service, Groove Music.

Groove will be axed by Microsoft on 31st December and the users will be provoked to transfer their collection of music to Spotify.

The Groove Music app has been used by Xbox One owners to play music in the background. "We will continue to invest in and update the Groove Music app on all Windows devices to support playback and management of owned music", said Johnson.

The alliance builds on Spotify's recently-launched application for Microsoft's Xbox One console, as well as the debut of its desktop app in the company's Windows Store.

For more on Groove Music shutting down and the transition to Spotify, you'll find an exhaustive FAQ here, which should help address any queries you might have on the matter. In an effort to put a positive spin on a negative development, Microsoft announced yesterday that they're partnering with Spotify. Once you are signed into your account, you'll see a pop-up window from Spotify with instructions on how to login or create a Spotify account.

Groove Music pass Subscription costs $9.99 but it never offered anything special to attract users already using Spotify or Apple Music. The software behemoth has announced that it's axing its Groove Music services (streaming, purchases and re-downloads) after December 31st, 2017. Groove will receive an update on Windows 10 next week which will guide you through the process.

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) has finally admitted defeat in the music world. Playlists and collections from Groove will move to Spotify and paid users will get 60 days free of Spotify Premium. Basically, download your music (if you have any) is the message to 99 per cent of people. However, Pandora does not truly compete with services like Spotify because the former has still not been able to convert its free users into paying customers. The music streaming service doesn't have any built-in function for this objective, and it also doesn't let you connect third-party cloud storage services for this.
