Hurricane Ophelia to hit Dorset - bringing winds up to 42mph

Hurricane Ophelia is moving northeastwards far out over the Atlantic Ocean. It is expected to make a close approach to the Azores as a Category 1 hurricane, though a direct landfall doesn't appear likely.

Hurricane Ophelia is predicted to hit Scotland over the next few days.

The storm is the 10th hurricane that has developed in the Atlantic this season.

But Ophelia will not be at hurricane status by the time it reaches the United Kingdom, as our waters are not warm enough to sustain it at that strength.

Ophelia is forecast to drift northeast through today and to pass just south of the Azores into the weekend.

However, the worst of the winds are expected to hit the West coast, reaching 150kph and potentially 160kph in the extreme West coast, by Monday night.

The center of the storm will remain well offshore but high wind, heavy rain, and damaging surf will all be possible along the Iberian Peninsula.

"But then it will continue its way towards the British Isles, probably reaching us very early next week".

The Met Office has also said there is a "slight chance" of damage to buildings, like tiles falling from roofs. The last time a season produced 10 consecutive hurricanes was in 1893, according to Colorado State University meteorologist Phil Klotzbach - a period when tracking hurricanes largely relied on ships and barometric readings.

Mr Burkhill said: "It's definitely something that we are keeping an eye on, for the possibility of some disruptive weather early next week".
