Apple Buys Wireless Charging Designer PowerbyProxi

Apple has bought wireless charging technology developer PowerbyProxi, a company spun out of Auckland University research in 2007, for an undisclosed sum.

PowerbyProxi, founded by Fady Mishriki and Greg Cross in 2007, is a spin-off of a University of Auckland project that has gained global recognition for the development of wireless charging systems, based on the Wireless Power Consortium's future Qi wireless standard.

The company has already announced that it plans to release a charging device that allows its range of devices to charge wirelessly. The lesser-known firm specializes in wireless charging technology based on the Qi wireless standard.

In a rare move, Apple confirmed that it had in fact acquired PowerbyProxi. Apple usually don't confirm any acquisition directly but this time Dan Riccio, Apple's senior vice president of hardware engineering has confirmed the deal. Apple did not disclose a purchase price, but said the team will remain based in Auckland. Buying PowerbyProxi gives Apple significant experience in the field. Until that happens, it's a safe bet third-party charger makers will be watching closely to see if Apple decides it wants to make a proprietary wireless charging solution instead.

PowerbyProxi designs and develops high efficiency and high density wireless power transfer technology for mobile phones, rechargeable batteries and industrial uses. One of the company's products is Proxi-Module, a modular wireless-power system that can be adapted and integrated into other products.

Fady Mishriki, founder and CEO of PowerbyProxi, added: "The team and I are thrilled to join Apple. There is tremendous alignment with our values, and we are excited to continue our growth in Auckland and contribute to the great innovation in wireless charging coming out of New Zealand".
