Man trapped in gas station cooler stays overnight, drinks beer

Marshfield police: Man locked in beer cooler for 6 hours, drinks beer then leaves

But commenters on WAOW Newsline 9's Facebook page accused Van Ert of not drinking enough while he was in the cooler.

In Marshfield, a 38-year-old man went to the local Kwik Trip shortly before midnight to buy beer but somehow locked himself inside the cooler.

'The subject found himself locked in the beer cooler, knew that Kwik Trip would not sell him any beer, so he chose to remain in the beer cooler, ' Marshfield Police Chief Rick Gramza told WAOW-TV. He also knocked over a stack of 30-can beer packs, which resulted in three cases breaking open. The workers opened the door and man left without paying for the beer.

Police cited Van Ert for theft and he reportedly was being held in the Wood County Jail on a probation hold from an unrelated case. The local ABC affiliate WAOW reports that Van Ert is now behind bars at a local jail on probation hold from an unrelated case that required him to stay sober. The man said he decided he would stay in the cooler all night and drink beer instead of knocking on the glass door to alert Kwik Trip employees.

You've probably heard this iconic quote from Ben Franklin: "Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy".

Kwik Trip management said they would be reviewing their security after the incident, WAOW reported.
