Israel destroys tunnel from Gaza, killing seven Palestinians

Palestinian Muslim worshipers attend the first Friday prayers of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan outside the Dome of the Rock at Jerusalem's Al Aqsa Mosque compound

At least six terrorists were killed and ten more injured as the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) destroyed a terror tunnel that had extended into Israeli territory, The Times of Israel reported Monday.

The UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) had said a couple of days ago that it had "discovered the existence of what appeared to be a tunnel underneath one of its schools in Gaza".

Most belonged to Islamic Jihad, one of several groups in Gaza that are classified as terrorist organizations by the US and European Union.

A source for the Islamic Jihad militant group said Arafat Abu Marshould, head of the group's armed wing in central Gaza, was killed with a senior associate and two other gunmen, adding that the group's fighters were on "full alert".

Several times during the 2014 war Hamas militants caught Israeli soldiers off guard by entering the country through tunnel networks.

Islamic Jihad will respond to the Israeli action "at the right moment", spokesman Dawood Shihab told reporters in Gaza.

Col. (res) Atai Shelach, the former commander of the engineering combat unit, Yahalom, which is charge of detecting and destroying the terror tunnels built by Hamas, told The Israel Project that this latest demolition of a terror tunnel is "part of a race". The Palestinian enclave is already fenced off above ground.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu on Monday credited Israel's "groundbreaking technology" for the discovery of the tunnel without giving further details.

Israel's Ambassador to the U.N. Danny Danon said Sunday, "Yet another terror tunnel under an UNRWA schoolyard. Today, we located a tunnel and we destroyed it".

The developments come after Hamas and Fatah signed a breakthrough reconciliation agreement in the Egyptian capital Cairo earlier this month, following a decade of division between the two political parties.

It went on to hold Hamas - which has governed the strip since 2007 - responsible for what it described as "hostile activity".
