Duterte to discuss NKorea with Japan's Abe

Defence officials call on Nth Korea to avoid 'provocations'

President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe agreed to work together on steps to counter North Korea's nuclear and missile development, ahead of the USA leader's visit to Asia, the Japanese government said late on Monday.

Duterte thanked Abe for fleshing out the $9 billion he had pledged for the Philippines, which would go to "some of the most ambitious and groundbreaking projects", including a subway system in Metro Manila, improvement of roads and disaster response.

"Someone has to reach out and talk to him and say something like, friend, why don't you just join me at the table and talk about these things", Duterte added. Duterte, meanwhile, traveled to Japan on Monday for one-on-one meetings with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Stoltenberg called North Korea a "global threat" and said he backed tighter sanctions against it.

Senior defence officials from the United States, South Korea and Japan have urged North Korea to walk away from its "destructive and reckless path" of weapons development, according to a USA military statement.

"I will skip two pages of my prepared speech and go to the last page because I am hungry", Duterte said, sending his audience in a laughing frenzy.

"One is security of the regional threat and of the entire world".

"We will provide maximum support to the restoration and reconstruction of Marawi City, and we will strengthen support for Mindanao, and toward the establishment of an autonomous government, we will respond to the progress of processes", he said.

Duterte said he would likewise extend the Filipinos' appreciation over Japan's "timely assistance" in addressing insurgency in the southern Philippines.

His and Abe's discussions were "very warm, open and comprehensive", he said.

Duterte said the relationship between the Philippines and Japan is "a friendship that is held dearly and valued so much, more than words can describe".

The amount, which would cover a total of 18 deals, will be channeled to shipbuilding and iron and steel, agribusiness, power, renewable energy, transportation, infrastructure and mineral processing.

"PRRD met several Japanese companies and witnessed several business-to-business memoranda of understanding and letters of intent on investment plans, joint ventures, and expansion of operations in the Philippines", he said.

Japanese companies have pledged at least $6bn worth of new investments in the Philippines, Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez has announced.
