Horror as Tokyo police find 9 bodies hidden in apartment

Zama man probed in Tokyo woman's disappearance arrested after police find nine corpses in his flat

A police officer would not comment on the eight other bodies reportedly found in Shiraishi's apartment. Shiraishi allegedly told the police that he cut up the bodies in the bath, disposing of some body parts in the garbage.

The bodies, in varying stages of decomposition, were found Monday while police were investigating the disappearance of a 23-year-old woman, the spokesman said.

"It's true that I tried to hide the bodies of the people I killed to destroy evidence", Shiraishi was quoted as saying by the police.

A 27-year-old man is in police custody after dismembered human remains were found in his apartment in the city of Zama, about 30 miles southwest of Tokyo, the English-language Japan Times reported.

Following questioning, police arrested Takahiro Shiraishi, 27, on suspicion of abandoning a corpse. According to other media, the young man, and this woman had come into contact through a website containing information on suicides.

Citing police sources, TV Asahi reported three cooler boxes and five containers were found in Shiraishi's room containing human heads and bones with the flesh scraped off.

Police are will now use DNA analysis and dental records to identify the bodies.

Footage from security cameras showed the woman, who went missing about a week ago, and the man walking together near JR Hachioji Station and near his home on October 23.

An neighbor in the apartment building said he noticed an unusual smell coming from Shiraishi's apartment after he became a resident in August, but did not observe any odd noises or voices. "With no notable fluctuations, the homicide rate in Japan has decreased steadily since 1955 to reach one of the lowest levels in the world", the report says.

"I thought it smelled like sewage", the neighbour said.

Earlier this month, a man was arrested for killing his wife and five children after setting fire to their house.
