President of Iraq's Kurdish Region Resigns

UK urges Iraq KRG to maintain dialogue

An Iraqi official showed Reuters pictures of the Iraqi flag being raised at the border gate, where Iraqi and Turkish soldiers were deployed and Turkish flags also hoisted. The city was retaken by Iraqi forces earlier this month. He said "a committee is overseeing the redeployment of federal forces to areas taken under the control of the Kurdish region after 2003", the year of the US -led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein.

The Habur border gate is in Turkish hands, while the Ibrahim Khalil gate on the Iraq side is in the control of Iraqi authorities, Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildrim announced.

Barzani's government held an independence referendum in late September, prompting a military response from Baghdad.

Iraq's 2005 constitution gave the Kurds some autonomy.

However, in a move to help defuse tensions with the Kurds, he said on Tuesday Baghdad would start paying "soon" the salaries of Kurdish Peshmerga fighters and civil servants working for the KRG.

The main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) has said it hopes that the situation in northern Iraq will normalize as Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) President Masoud Barzani has chose to step down.

He said "strong KRG is essential to Iraqi long-term stability and to enduring defeat of Islamic State".

Iraqi government forces entered territory disputed between Baghdad and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) on 16 October.

"We call on all Kurdish parties to support the KRG as it works to resolve pending issues over the remainder of its term and prepare for elections in 2018", U.S. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said in a statement commending Barzani's decision.
