27 dead in Texas church shooting

Unfathomable. Local official tells CNN that 27 people are dead in this Texas church shooting.

The gunman was identified as Devin Patrick Kelley, according to a CBS News law enforcement source.

Wilson County Sheriff Joe Tackitt said the shooter was killed after the shooting, The Wilson County News reported. Agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and ATF have responded to the scene.

Local media report a two-year-old is among the shooting victims.

The FBI has arrived to secure the scene. Among those killed at the white clapboard church was a 14-year-old girl named Annabelle Renee Pomeroy, according to her father, Frank Pomeroy, who is a pastor at the church.

"This is a very small community, so everyone was very curious as to what was going on".

Sutherland Springs is a community of about 400 people 30 miles southeast of San Antonio. It was not immediately clear how the shooter was taken down.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott called the shooting an "evil act", and promised "more details" from the state's Department of Public Safety soon. Ted Cruz (R-TX) tweeted "keeping all harmed in Sutherland Springs in our prayers".

A man is reported to have begun shooting at around 11am on Sunday morning at Sutherland Springs, 48 kilometres south-east of San Antonio leaving multiple victims, KSAT and KENS reported. The people of Sutherland Springs need our prayers right now.

If initial casualty numbers hold, Sunday's shooting, which comes just 35 days after a gunman in Las Vegas shot and killed 58 people and wounded hundreds more, is the fourth-deadliest in American history.
