NFL Week 9: Keys for Giants vs. Rams

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

The Giants were embarrassed in a 51-17 loss to the Rams on Sunday at MetLife Stadium.

The Giants are one of three teams who are winless at home this season. Cornerback Janoris Jenkins was unavailable on Sunday as he served his ban.

It has been a collective meltdown for the Giants, who have suspended a pair of defensive backs for a violation of team rules in the past three weeks. Four plays later, Tyler Higbee caught an eight-yard touchdown from Jared Goff for the first points of the game.

The first half of the teams' Week 9 meeting went about as you'd expect, with the Giants parting the seas for several big Rams play through the first two quarters.

Los Angeles Rams fans watch during the second half of an NFL football game against the New York Giants Sunday, Nov. 5, 2017, in East Rutherford, N.J. The Giants had 319 yards of offense, made 17 first downs, and ran for 111 yards. And the Rams recorded at least 40 points for the third time this season. Seeking only some field position, Goff completed a short pass to receiver Robert Woods, but some bad coverage by the Giants allowed Woods to run 52 yards, essentially untouched, for a touchdown and a 17-7 lead. Eli Manning was responsible for two turnovers, one on a lost fumble and another on an interception, while rookie RB Wayne Gallman also fumbled. Manning finished 20-of-36 passing for 220 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. So, you know, they've been playing well, they've been scoring a lot of points, they've got a good defense, and you know, they just hit some big plays.

Including a missed field goal by Aldrick Rosas for the fourth time in five games (he did not have an attempt in Week 5), the special teams outfit wasn't free of mistakes either.

The Giants may have been short-handed - eight of their 22 projected Week 1 starters were out - but this was a collective failure, the kind that can cost people jobs.

ABOUT THE GIANTS (1-6): NY will be without cornerback Janoris Jenkins, who was suspended indefinitely for violation of team rules. Everyone has to be on notice.
