21st Century Fox considering selling most of company to Disney

Disney Looked at Buying Most of Fox, Talks Now Dead, CNBC Says

Amid that trend, Fox is open to such a deal with Disney amid senior management's growing sentiment that scale is of "immediate importance", said CNBC.

If The Walt Disney Company doesn't own the world yet, perhaps they will soon enough. Such an agreement would prevent Disney from violating FCC rules, which prohibit one company from owning more than one of the four major broadcast networks - Disney already owns ABC. The deal between Fox and Disney is said to be aimed at leaving the former's news and sports properties and selling the rest to the latter. Disney already owns ABC, and therefore can not also own another broadcast network, due to FCC regulations. Disney also would pick up Fox's Star and B Sky B global networks. By offloading its media properties, the studio would keep a tight focus on news and sports. The Fox News and Business channels would also be left behind, as would Fox's local affiliates, CNBC adds. That £11.7bn ($15.41bn) deal has run afoul of regulators' concerns about media plurality in the United Kingdom and the Murdochs' commitment to broadcasting standards. He assumes Fox shareholders would get equity in the larger Disney. But Disney could acquire Fox's film and television studios, global assets like Sky and Star, and Fox's cable networks including FX and National Geographic. The company previously announced that it will be pulling its content from Netflix and offering it through its own standalone streaming service, a controversial decision given the extra monthly expense that will put on some consumers.

"I see lots of synergies for Disney". That might lead to a focus on doing even more sports than they now do, and that's even before you consider to the apparent corporate emphasis on sports here. But 21st Century Fox wouldn't sell all of its company.

According to CNBC, 20th Century Fox is willing to sell many of its assets over to Disney.

Also on the block would be much of Fox's global distribution operations and its 39 per cent stake in Britain's Sky, in which Fox has been seeking full control pending regulatory approval. And that microscope has certainly caused some concerns for Disney and ESPN.

It'd definitely be interesting. In light of the news, neither Fox nor Disney have been able to be reached for comment or confirmation. We'll see if anything further comes of this, but if it does, it could dramatically alter the sports and media landscape.
