Facebook now testing a system that will help end revenge porn

Facebook suggests users upload nudes to avoid revenge porn

Facebook is asking users to send the company their nude photos in an effort to tackle revenge porn, in an attempt to give some control back to victims of this type of abuse.

Back in April, Facebook took steps aimed at combating revenge porn in Canada and the U.S., allowing users to flag an image they suspect was posted without consent. Grant said Facebook is not storing the image, just the hash. They would store the link and use artificial intelligence and other image recognition tools to detect and remove nonconsensual images.

"It would be like sending yourself your image in email, but obviously this is a much safer, secure end-to-end way of sending the image without sending it through the ether", said Julie Inman Grant, e-Safety commissioner.

The social media giant is teaming up with a small Government agency from down under, to prevent all sensitive images of its users from being shared without the subject's consent.

As Facebook tests the new strategy out in various countries, some state laws in the United States are making sharing non-consensual explicit images a federal crime, like child porn.

Having proven itself capable of taking out Russian agents, Facebook is now rolling out a plan it promises will stop revenge porn.

In our bad cyberpunk world full of hellish new tech-based ways to harass and abuse people (especially women) online, revenge porn is one of the most pernicious.

The limited pilot program is available in three other countries: the U.S., U.K., and Canada. Facebook "in most cases" will delete the account of the person who first shared the image, Vice reported. Nonetheless, Alex Stamos, Facebook chief security officer, said the company was improving its software in order to prevent such circumvention. It was even the topic of a Netflix documentary titled, "Revenge Porn". "Some information is more valuable for hackers, and hashed photos could be one of them".

According to a 2016 study by the Data & Society Research Institute, One in 25 Americans has been a victim of threats or posts of almost nude or nude images without their permission. More protections for people who could be affected by revenge porn are desperately needed, but this method of protecting privacy has some people unnerved.
