Southern train drivers vote to accept the deal

Second day of strike action at Irish Rail takes place tomorrow

It was later announced that drivers operating on Southern Railway have voted overwhelmingly to end its long running dispute over driver-only trains.

Yesterday the rail network ground to a halt in the second 24 hour strike by drivers in the row over pay. This is because we know that a second member of staff provides assurance to our passengers and ensures we have capable colleagues on board to deliver assistance or offer advice during journeys.

Driver will be responsible for opening and closing train doors, with guards transferred to the role of the on-board supervisor.

Train companies said they will try to run as many services as possible, but some routes into London will face disruption, and passengers have been warned to check before they travel.

Mick Whelan, general secretary of ASLEF, the train drivers' union, said: "Our members on Southern, after careful consideration, and long and hard negotiations, have voted to accept this resolution to our industrial dispute with the company".

"We now look forward to working with Southern Rail to restore good industrial relations and deliver the service passengers in the region deserve".

The November 14th strike date will clash with the Ireland v Denmark World Cup play-off at Lansdowne Road.

These will be the 37th and 38th strike days the union has called since April 2016.

Billed as the "biggest disruption to passengers in decades" due to the number of operators affected, hundreds of services will be cancelled, replacement buses will be laid on and services that do run will be busier than normal.

Mick Cash, general secretary of the RMT Union, said: "These strikes are about rail safety and accessibility pure and simple".

A Transport Department spokesperson accused the RMT of attempting to disrupt passengers as part of a "political game".

'The independent rail regulator has said driver-controlled trains, which have been used in this country for more than 30 years, are safe'.

"The agreement also confirms the terms and conditions under which our members at Southern are employed. Only this week at the Wimbledon derailment it was the guard on that train who safely evacuated 300 passengers in an emergency situation".
