US Commerce Secretary says Trump-Xi talks will address trade imbalances

Commercial, trade issues between China, United States

As they exited Air Force One, Trump and first lady Melania Trump were met by Chinese and American dignitaries, soldiers standing stiffly at attention, a band playing martial music and smartly attired children waving miniature Chinese and American flags while chanting, "Welcome, welcome".

Analysts say there is a perception in China that ensuring a good personal rapport between the two leaders would be key to resolving structural impediments.

"Addressing the imbalance in China trade has been a central focus of collaborative discussions between President Trump and President Xi".

Chatting over cups of tea, Trump showed Xi a video of his granddaughter Arabella Kushner singing in Mandarin and reciting classical Chinese poetry, prompting Xi to compliment her performance as worthy of an "A+", Chinese state media said.

And while his visit to China will be a crucial opportunity for Trump to press Chinese officials to increase market access for USA companies in China, end unfair subsidies to Chinese companies dumping goods in the U.S. and curtail the theft of United States intellectual property, his efforts could be undercut by the pressure he must mount on Xi when it comes to North Korea.

Dining in the Forbidden City will be a significant honor for Trump, in keeping with what China's Ambassador to the US Cui Tiankai promised would be a "state visit-plus".

Hours after calling North Korea a "cruel dictatorship" during a speech to South Korea's parliament, Trump wrote that Pyongyang "has interpreted America's past restraint as weakness".

"At the centre of this military cult is a deranged belief in the leader's destiny to rule as parent protector over a conquered Korean Peninsula and an enslaved Korean people".

Russian Federation said North Korea is still two to three years from being able to carry out a long-range strike on the U.S., offering diplomacy a chance to halt the secretive Communist state's nuclear and missile programmes.

The US wants to intensify pressure on North Korea through sanctions.

Two have overflown Japan, and Pyongyang says it can mount a nuclear warhead on a rocket with the U.S. mainland within range. "You cannot support, you cannot supply, you cannot accept".

Before arriving in Beijing, Trump used a speech at the South Korean parliament to condemn Pyongyang but also urge China and Russian Federation to fully implement United Nations sanctions, downgrade diplomatic ties, and sever all trade and technology ties with the North.

"China had to realize that Trump needed to learn about China", he says, "and during this learning process, we had to stay cool and patient".

Trump attends the presidential summit at the presidential Blue House in Seoul, South Korea, as part of his Asian tour.

The regime has for decades been criticised for a range of rights abuses including torture, rape and execution of perceived critics or those trying to flee the country. But it also underscored the geopolitical realities Trump has had to confront as President - and the relief here that he has yet to enact numerous toughest measures he pledged at almost every campaign trail rally.

In what he said was a direct message to the country's young leader, he told him: "North Korea is not the paradise your grandfather envisioned".

"Yet despite every crime you have committed against God and man; we will offer a path towards a much better future".

"(Xi's) going to treat Trump nearly like an emperor", said Ming.

People's University's Shi is even more pessimistic.
