'Year of the Trans Candidate'

Her victory followed another historic election result Tuesday night as Virginia House of Delegates candidate Danica Roem (D) defeated incumbent Robert Marshall (R) to become Virginia's first openly transgender elected official.

After campaigning for a seat in the Minneapolis City Council, she went on to win 73 percent of the votes last night.

While other transgender politicians have taken seat in office before, the word "openly" makes a difference here. She ran on a platform of raising the minimum wage and making housing affordable.

At the same time, Danica Roem became the first transgender person to be elected as a state official in the U.S. - by beating a virulent transphobe. A similar fate befell Joanne Marie Conte (1933-2013), whose adversaries collected money to oust her identity as a transgender woman after she won a seat on the Arvada, Colorado, City Council in 1991. His victory wasn't announced until Wednesday afternoon, due to the instant-runoff voting system Minneapolis uses. However, she also a transgender activist and curator of the Transgender Oral History Project at the University of Minnesota, where she's interviewed nearly 200 people about their experiences as transgender and gender nonconforming people.

The win was especially heralded due to Marshall's refusal to debate Roem, to whom his ads referred as a man, rather than as a woman.

Jenkins, 56, said she believes her and Roem's victories are proof numerous nation's communities won't succumb to hatred, bigotry or transphobia - and are willing to fight for social justice and equality for all minority groups.

Andrea Jenkins was elected Tuesday to represent Minneapolis' Eighth Ward on the city council.

Whether they can maintain that momentum to win US Congressional elections in states President Trump won is another question.

"We're really trying to bring some resources to underserved, underinvested communities", she said. During yesterday's elections across the USA three of them won their races in what's being called a stunning rebuke to Trump's divisive politics.

Jenkins' background includes serving as a historian for the University of Virginia's Transgender Oral History Project.

Tyler Titus, elected to the Erie, Penn., School Board, is the first openly trans person ever elected in Pennsylvania. "I really want to get a hold on economic developments strategy that employs northsiders; when people are employed, we can figure out the other issues in north Minneapolis".

Lisa Middleton became the first transgender person elected to a non-judicial office in California.
