Florida State University Suspends Fraternities and Sororities Indefinitely After Student Death

Details Emerging After FSU Fraternity Member Found Dead

Mr. Thrasher said he had reviewed actions taken by other universities before he made a decision to enact a suspension across the Greek system.

At a news conference on Monday, Thrasher said that reviewing the steps other academic institutions had taken to curb fraternity violence had encouraged him to go forward with the suspension.

"I just feel like for whatever reason, the message is not getting through", Thrasher said.

Coffey, a civil engineering major from Pompano Beach and a Pi Kappa Phi pledge, died after attending an off-campus house party. "There must be a new culture, and our students but be full participants in creating it".

A member of Phi Delta Theta at the university was arrested Monday in an unrelated case for sale and trafficking of cocaine.

Tallahassee Police Chief Michael DeLeo says indicators suggest alcohol played a role in the junior's death, although they are waiting on an autopsy to confirm, reports CNN. Louisiana State had a one-month suspension and continues to ban alcohol at Greek parties after the hazing death of 18-year old Maxwell Gruver in September.

"I've communicated with those kinds of groups and let them know that I have zero tolerance for those kinds of activities and that we will bring the hammer down on them if they act inappropriately in those areas", Thrasher told the paper. "I think hazing is a problem and alcohol is the basis of a lot of their events", said Abygail Stiekman.

"For me and a lot of the people who are entering, we're all pretty upset because we are trying to get the reputation back up", she said.

FSU President John Thrasher also announced a ban on alcohol at events run by the school's more than 700 recognized student organizations. "Most of the organizations getting in trouble are fraternities". "I hope that it's a short-lived response".

In a 2016 interview with the FSView & Florida Flambeau, a student publication at the university, Thrasher expressed sentiments of zero tolerance when it comes to hazing rituals in the Greek community.

Armstrong said there's more to fraternity life than just drinking and partying. FSU says the suspension will prohibit any organized chapter activities, including tailgates, new member events, chapter meetings, and any organization events including socials, intramural activities, and retreats. The university will allow students who live in fraternity and sorority houses to remain there. "They will have to participate in the solution".
