LSU athletics reaches 90 percent in Graduation Success Rate

Thousands of LSU fans gather and party at tailgates outside of LSU's Tiger Stadium and across campus before the Tigers first home game of the season against Chattanooga on Saturday

A new set of data on the Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of Division I athletics programs was released on Wednesday afternoon and Villanova continues to rank among the best in the nation in this measure of academic performance.

The GSR formula removes from the rate student-athletes who leave school while academically eligible and includes student-athletes who transfer to a school after initially enrolling elsewhere. The commitment and dedication of our student-athletes, coaches and academic support staff combined with these focused initiatives has resulted in a remarkable increase in our GSR, including this year's record of 80 percent.

The Rutgers football program has earned a GSR score of 81 percent-or-better in each of the past nine years. In the fall of 2013, as UConn was on its way to winning its most recent championship, the program's graduation rate hit a low of 8 percent.

Villanova earned a ideal 100 percent GSR score in both men's and women's basketball. The WCC average is 90 percent and the NCAA average is 85. Analysis of the 2011-12 class suggests that Purdue's GSR will improve to the department goal of 85 percent in the spring of 2018. The GSR numbers for most colleges are much higher than the federal graduation rates, which counts any student who leaves an institution as a nongraduate and does not track incoming transfers.

In men's basketball, the Hokies' GSR was 80 percent, a number that ranked tied for eighth in the ACC and was two percentage points above the FBS national average.

The GSR takes into account the many different academic paths followed by today's college students.

The University of Dayton's score is 94, eight points higher than the national average. Women's tennis and volleyball have recorded ideal GSRs for five-consecutive years and both men's and women's cross country/track and field have owned 100-percent GSRs in each of the last two years.

WKU's largest jumps over the federal rate came on the hardwood as both men's basketball (75) and women's basketball (90) almost doubled the nation's average rate.

Five additional teams - women's cross country/track (96), swimming (95), softball (92), volleyball (92) and women's basketball (90) - earned a score of 90 percent-or-higher.
