Martellus Bennett claimed by Patriots off waivers, per report

Packers TE Martellus Bennett ruled out Sunday against Bears

The Patriots will probably be vague about the tight end's status, as per usual for coach Bill Belichick.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Bennett was claimed on waivers by the New England Patriots.

The Packers waived Bennett with a "failure to diagnose physical condition" designation, and the Patriots, who were among the lowest in the pecking order, snagged him.

In seven games, Bennett caught 24 passes for 233 yards and didn't score a touchdown.

Bennett was notably waived by the Packers earlier in the week while never reaching the open market as New England has reportedly executed a reunion.

Blount played for the Patriots in 2013, then signed with the Steelers for 2014.

Bennett was a part of the 2016 Super Bowl-winning team. However, they let him walk in free agency because they didn't want to meet his asking price.

While it remains to be seen how that ailment will affect Bennett's availability going forward, scooping him up now is a classic Patriots move.

But the Patriots needed some offensive help with Julian Edelman out for the season, Chris Hogan nursing a shoulder injury and Allen still catchless. It's unclear, though, if Bennett will play on "Sunday Night Football" this week.

There's also a possibility that Bennett hangs up his cleats after this season.

During the bye week, Bennett posted on Instagram that he was "pretty sure" he would retire at the end of the 2017 season. Last year, the prospect of seeing the Patriots deploy the duo of Gronkowski and Bennett was exciting for Patriots fans.
