Twitter now allows you to post 280 character tweets

President Donald Trump has already gotten the hang of longer tweets

It's a confusing time, with most users complaining about this update, and the rest taking the absolute piss.

Celtic, for example, used their first 280-character tweet to re-emphasise their longstanding spell of dominance in Scottish football. That's 560 characters. It's basically a book.

The feature has been rolled out in most languages.

Munich police, meanwhile, said that "at last" they won't need abbreviations to tweet about accidents involving forklift drivers, or Niederflurfoerderfahrzeugfuehrer.

"We - and many of you - were concerned that timelines may fill up with 280 character Tweets, and people with the new limit would always use up the whole space".

Users had also anxious that longer tweets would exacerbate Twitter's ongoing problem with harassment - more characters might mean more scope for abuse. Nine percent of all tweets in English, for instance, hit the 140-character limit, while only 0.4% of tweets in Japanese hit the limit. Now, Twitter users might find that process half as painful.

Shakespeare may have written that "brevity is the soul of wit", but it appears that social media users are intent on proving him wrong.

On Tuesday Twitter doubled the number of characters one can use in their posts from 140 to 280. Only five percent of tweets sent during the test and only two percent exceeded their 190-character limit.

The 140-character limit certainly made it hard for businesses to share in-depth messages.

Twitter was initially limited to 140 words because at the beginning of the service people tweeted via text, which at the time had a 140-character limit.

So, it seems 280 characters is good for business.
