Roy Moore vehemently denies sexual misconduct

Alabama GOP nominee for Senate Roger Moore

Four women have come forward to accuse Alabama Republican Senate nominee Roy Moore of making sexual advances on them when they were just teenagers and Moore was in his 30s.

The Washington Post reported Thursday that an Alabama woman said Moore had sexual contact with her when she was 14 and he was a 32-year-old assistant district attorney.

On Friday, a day after news of the allegations broke, the National Republican Senatorial Committee filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission to end participation in a joint fundraising committee with Moore's campaign.

The Moore campaign issued a statement Thursday calling the allegations "the very definition of fake news and intentional defamation".

The NRSC did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

"The allegations against Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore are deeply troubling", said Colorado Sen.

President Trump would want Moore to step aside if the allegations against him are true, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said on Friday. But other Republican Senators, including John McCain and Jeff Flake, have struck a tone closer to that of Romney.

"I guess here's a question for you, if it came down in an election between a Republican who had been proven a child molester or a Democrat, would you vote for the Democrat?"

During the 2012 election, Republican Senate candidates in Missouri and in made inaccurate and controversial comments about rape that allowed Democrats to make inroads with women voters across the country.

Vice President Mike Pence also "found the allegations in the story disturbing and believes, if true, this would disqualify anyone from serving in office", said spokeswoman Alyssa Farah.

If, however, the state party tells election officials that it wants to withdraw its nominee, or if Moore himself made a decision to do so, election officials would not certify any votes cast for Moore.

Moore faces Democratic nominee Doug Jones in the special election for the U.S. Senate. They also said Ziegler got the facts wrong and ignored the cultural context of the time in which Jesus lived. "Moore is unfit for office and should step aside".

Moore, who has made his moral and religious beliefs the heart of his pitch to voters, prevailed over several Republican opponents in a closely contested primary that saw Trump, Senator McConnell and most Senate Republicans support the incumbent who had been appointed to Sessions' seat, Luther Strange.

"Take Joseph and Mary".

"Take the Bible. Mary was a teenager and Joseph was an adult carpenter".

The woman who described the assault at the age of 14 told her story consistently and was corroborated by friends and records, the Post says.

Moore continues to do well with Alabama's evangelicals, who seem as a voting bloc to be prepared to accept virtually anything of late, but he is being outperformed by Trump among every other group. They did not have sexual intercourse, according to the report.

"There's a very odd propensity of sexual allegations to suddenly become politically useful in the run-up to an election, or when someone stands up for the principles of the republic, like Clarence Thomas, and needs to be taken down", said Sebastian Gorka, a former White House adviser who became a Fox News contributor this week.
