Skyview High School thanks local veterans with a special assembly

Students at St. Mark Catholic School had a special type of show and tell Thursday in honor of Veterans Day

This is the 14th Annual Veterans' Day Celebration held at Shelledy Elementary School.

The assembly also featured a fife and drum duo playing "Amazing Grace" while students and veterans remembered friends and family that have served in the USA military.

The Highland County Veterans Honor Guard conducted the posting of the colors at the event, and the Hillsboro High School band performed the national anthem, as well as the rallying songs of each military branch.

Melonas said each year, students and staff create an "honor wall" as a tribute to veterans.

Local veterans who watched the ceremony say it reminds them of the lost brothers and a nation that is eternally grateful for their sacrifice. For numerous students, the ceremony meant taking the time to thank moms, dads, grandpas, grandmas, aunts, and uncles for their service. "We like them to bring in pictures, artifacts, things they can share with the kids to give the kids a sense of what it's like to serve in our military".

At all of the schools, veterans and their families are welcome, along with other community members.

The children showed they had been learning some basic skills by presenting an enthusiastic rendition of the Pledge of Allegiance.

In a statement, Principal Robert Bruce called the school's annual Salute to Veterans event "a great opportunity for our students to gain a better understanding of the sacrifices made by the courageous men and women who have served our country".
